BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — Two people were killed in a small plane crash in the Florida Everglades, according to multiple reports.
The wreckage was discovered Wednesday morning on the north side of Alligator Alley, about four miles west of U.S. 27, according to the Broward County sheriff.
Fire rescue officials told news station WPLG that the single-engine Cessna Skyhawk aircraft went missing around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday. The plane was reportedly airborne for about 15 minutes before it disappeared.
CBS Miami reports that the plane broke apart on impact and sparked a small fire among the debris.
"Our local fire station, about three or four miles away, responded with their airboat and other assets. They were able to make contact with that aircraft very quickly, about 40 minutes time. Unfortunately, the two occupants of that aircraft were already deceased," Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Michael Kane told CBS.
The crash remains under investigation.
