Tampa sees flooding on major roadways after Debby dumps inches of rain

"While there were storm impacts citywide, South Tampa, West Tampa, and Seminole Heights have been particularly affected," the city of Tampa wrote in a release.

TAMPA, Fla. — The city of Tampa is still reeling from the effects of Hurricane Debby, which brought torrential rainfall, strong winds and storm surge to the area on Sunday.

Several major bridges and roadways remain closed as crews work to clear out damage and restore power.

"While there were storm impacts citywide, South Tampa, West Tampa, and Seminole Heights have been particularly affected," the city of Tampa wrote in a release.

According to city officials, the most common types of damage throughout Tampa are downed trees, downed power lines, flooded roadways, standing water and vehicles stuck in water.

Parts of Bayshore Boulevard saw significant flooding during the storm. N Dale Mabry Highway between Hillsborough Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, and side streets in the Drew Park area, were also inundated with water.

The city said fire crews successfully rescued one man who was trapped in his car at Osborne Avenue and N Dale Mabry Highway early Monday morning after he attempted to drive through floodwaters.

More than 100 Tampa residents have reported damage using the city's online self-reporting system. Anyone who would like to make a report to the Office of Emergency Management is encouraged to fill out the form.

City officials are reminding people to stay away from flooded areas, avoid driving through water and assume any downed power lines are live wires.

"While our city did experience some damage from Debby, I am grateful to report that Tampa has once again fared well and avoided severe impacts,” Mayor Jane Castor said. “Our community has faced significant challenges, but together, we are stronger. I urge all residents to stay safe, report any damage, and take necessary precautions to protect their homes and families.”
