Torrential rain, surge from Debby floods Pinellas County roads

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Roads throughout Pinellas County saw major flooding on Sunday as Tropical Storm Debby brought torrential rainfall and storm surges through the area.

Rainfall totals in the Tampa Bay area are expected to be in the 6-12 inch range, with 18 inches possible.

Coastal areas of Clearwater saw flooding as early as 1 p.m.

Several inches of water also accumulated along Gulf Boulevard, which led Pinellas County leaders to shut down all SunRunner stations along the road this afternoon.

There was also major flooding in the Sponge Docks area of Tarpon Springs.

St. Petersburg officials urged people to stay off the roads as several roads throughout the city saw flooding. Accuweather reporter Ali Reid reported several cars stalling out and drivers getting stuck near the flood-prone Shore Acres neighborhood. 

The Veterans Memorial Park area of Oldsmar was hit with a significant storm surge around 6:45 p.m.
