HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — Hurricanes Helene and Milton caused school districts across the Tampa Bay area to cancel classes before, during and after the storms.

Now, those same school districts are in the process of planning how to make up those missed days.

The Hillsborough County School District shared a revised calendar for the remainder of the school year on Wednesday, Oct. 23. Here are scheduling changes that parents, students and staff should know:

  • Fall, Winter and Spring breaks will remain the same.
  • The first semester will extend to Thursday, Jan. 16. It was originally scheduled to end on Friday, Dec. 20.
  • Monday, Jan. 6 was originally a non-student day. This has been changed to an early-release day for students.
  • There will be no early-release days in the second semester.
  • Florida State Fair Day on Friday, Feb. 14 will remain a non-student day for west county schools. East county schools will have a full-student day. Click or tap here for a chart showing the east county schools.
  • Monday, Feb. 17, which is Presidents' Day, is now a full day for students.
  • Strawberry Festival Day on Monday, March 3 will remain a non-student day for east county schools. West county schools will have a full-student day. Click or tap here for a chart showing the east county schools.
  • The end of the 3rd grading period will extend to Friday, March 28. It was originally scheduled to end on Friday, March 14.

Here are other notes that Hillsborough County parents, students and staff should know:

  • Semester 1 exams are waived for middle and high school students, with some exceptions
    • "At the high school level, this exam adjustment means the week before winter break is a full day student schedule rather than the typical exam week student schedule. Schools will communicate additional information at a later date," the district says.
  • Middle school credit and high school credit classes will be adjusted to 50 minutes, adding minutes to each class. There will be no change to elementary class minutes.
    • This may require slight modifications to middle or high school start and/or end times.
    • Any adjustments will be communicated to families the week of Dec. 2, 2024.
