NHC: Larry becomes hurricane in eastern Atlantic; Storm not a threat to US

Larry is forecast to reach major hurricane strength this weekend.

Tropical Storm Larry became a Category 1 hurricane early Thursday morning in the eastern Atlantic, the NHC says. It's the fifth hurricane of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season.

According to the 5 a.m. advisory, Larry is about 545 miles west-southwest of the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands. It currently has maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and is move west at 20 mph.

Hurricane Larry is expected to strengthen over the next couple of days and by Friday night is forecast to become a major hurricane.

Larry will eventually turn toward the west-northwest and slow down somewhat in the coming days.

The U.S. is currently not forecast to be impacted by the storm.

The remnants of Ida, which made landfall twice Sunday in Louisianna as a Category 4 hurricane, sent the New York City area into a state of emergency early Thursday, as the storm carried into New England with threats of more tornadoes.

The National Weather Service office in New York declared its first-ever set of flash flood emergencies in the region Wednesday night, an alert level that is reserved for “exceedingly rare situations when a severe threat to human life and catastrophic damage from a flash flood is happening or will happen soon.”

Earlier Wednesday, the storm blew through the mid-Atlantic states with at least two tornadoes, heavy winds and drenching rains that collapsed the roof of a U.S. Postal Service building in New Jersey and threatened to overrun a dam in Pennsylvania.

Ida caused flooding and damage to the Louisianna coast, including New Orleans, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without water or power. The region is under a heat advisory with forecasters saying the combination of high temperatures and humidity could make it feel like 106 degrees Fahrenheit on Wednesday.

At least four people have died from the storm in the Southern US and at least eight in New York City and New Jersey.
