Tarpon Springs Sponge Dock streets flood as Tropical Storm Debby passes through

The storm blocked roads in the area as high water flooded the sponge docks.

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. — Floodwater from Tropical Storm Debby blocked roads and stalled cars in Tarpon Springs as it passed through the Tampa Bay area.

Dodecanese Boulevard is closed from the Roosevelt Boulevard roundabout to Athens Street east and westbound due to high water flooding. Dodecanese Boulevard is also closed from Pinellas Avenue to Ardaras Street east and westbound.

Athens Street closed from Dodecanese Boulevard to the Cross Street fork.

Island Drive is also closed from Hill Street to Roosevelt Boulevard.

High waters can cause cars to stall. Tarpon Springs Police Department advises residents to be cautious while driving in a post on Facebook.

"Multiple areas throughout the City are currently experiencing high water. Several roads are closed, and caution should be used while traveling. Water may be deeper than it first appears. Turn around, don't drown," the post said.

As tides fluctuate, water levels across the docks will, too. High tide on Monday is expected at 1:37 p.m. and will lower around 8:52 p.m.

Rainfall totals in the Tampa Bay area are expected to be in the 6-12 inch range, with a possibility of reaching 18 inches.

Tarpon Springs reached more than 13 inches in the last 48 hours. In the last 12 hours, the area reached 10 inches.
