ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A few sandbag sites will be open Monday ahead of the potential for coastal flooding this week, the city announced.
The following sites were open for some time over the weekend and will reopen from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday:
- Stormwater Pavement Traffic Opps HQ, 1744 9th Ave. N.
- Mangrove Bay Golf Course, 875 62nd Ave. NE.
- Lake Maggiore Shelter Area, 3601 Dr. MLK St. S.
City crews spent some time during the day Sunday going door-to-door delivering sandbags to people in the Shore Acres and Riviera Bay neighborhoods — areas prone to flooding but have been especially hit hard during recent storms.
In the immediate Tampa Bay area, 2-3 feet of coastal flooding are possible starting Tuesday as strong to severe thunderstorms push in from the Gulf of Mexico and strong onshore winds push water up against the coast.
Sandbags can help homeowners during minor flooding events, according to 10 Tampa Bay chief meteorologist Bobby Deskins. Sandbags should be placed on top of the tail, or tied end, of the placed bag. Then, stack the bags up like bricks and step down on them.
