TAMPA, Fla. — With Tuesday being the coldest day for the Tampa Bay area since January, the region hasn't seen highs near 60 in months.

Into the night, the weather is set to turn colder with lows in the middle to upper 30s for the Nature Coast to the middle to upper 40s in Tampa. Wind chills may drop to near freezing by morning.

And with this chill in mind, a question sparked: What is the coldest temperature ever recorded in specific Tampa Bay-area cities?

While focusing on four major cities in the region, the team of meteorologists at 10 Tampa Bay compiled a list of the coldest recorded temperatures, which include:

  • Tampa: Dropped to 18 degrees on Dec. 13, 1962
  • Inverness: Dropped to 15 degrees on Jan. 21, 1985
  • St. Petersburg: Dropped to 22 degrees on Dec. 13, 1962
  • Sarasota: Dropped to 20 degrees on Dec. 26, 1983

"This goes to show the Tampa Bay area can get really cold, and we even saw snow back in 1977," 10 Tampa Bay Meteorologist Mike Prangley said.

Now is certainly time to take advantage of the cold weather over the next few days because temperatures will begin to get warm again. Make sure to dress for cooler weather, protect cold-sensitive plants and keep pets warm.

Starting Thursday afternoon, temps will return to the 70s. Temperatures are set to rebound near 80 degrees Friday into the weekend.
