What's open in the Tampa Bay area during Hurricane Helene? Not much

A majority of businesses and local government offices are closed for the Category 3 hurricane.

TAMPA, Fla. — A majority of Tampa Bay businesses, shops and restaurants are closed because of the predicted impacts of Hurricane Helene.

Some of the only places that are open are Universal Orlando Resort and Legoland. 

Universal Volcano Bay is closed but Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, Halloween Horror Nights and hotels remain open as resort staff monitor conditions, according to an X post.

Busch Gardens announced they would be closed Thursday due to the weather. All other major zoos and aquariums in the Tampa Bay area are also closed.

Some Target locations remain open for those who might need some last-minute hurricane supplies but these are the ones that are closed, according to Google Maps:

  • 3625 West Gandy Blvd.
  • 11627 West Hillsborough Ave.
  • 13658 University Plaza St.
  • 7150 US Highway 19 North
  • 4450 Park St. North 
  • 187 Brandon Town Center Dr. 

Even many Publix locations are closed. Many of them closed at 10 p.m. Wednesday and will remain closed until the storm passes through. You can view the full list of the stores affected here.

Winn Dixie on Madeira Beach and in Tarpon Springs are closed on Thursday. You can see the full list of impacted stores here.

The US Postal Service also temporarily suspended mail delivery and retail operations until further notice in some locations such as Crystal River.

So if you're looking for a bite to eat, hopefully, you packed some snacks in your hurricane kit because the options are limited.
