Tammy expected to intensify to a Category 2 hurricane

The storm is not expected to impact Puerto Rico, Bermuda or the United States.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Tropical Storm Tammy continues as a Category 1 hurricane but is expected to gain strength. Here is the latest from the National Hurricane Center.

Hurricane Tammy is bringing hurricane conditions to parts of the Leeward Islands this weekend. Much of the Lesser Antilles will likely see heavy rainfall and flooding.

Hurricane warnings are in effect for Guadeloupe, Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis. Several other Caribbean islands are under a tropical storm warning.

People who live in the Lesser Antilles should keep a close watch on the system. Weather computer models, including the American GFS and European, have come into better agreement of showing an organizing tropical storm that impacts some of the islands before curving off into the open Atlantic Ocean.

Models also agree that people in Florida and the U.S. can likely breathe a sigh of relief as the storm will remain out to sea.
