NHC: Tropical Storm Tammy expected to become season's next hurricane

The storm does not look to threaten the U.S.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Tropical Storm Tammy continues to gain strength since forming Wednesday afternoon in the central Atlantic Ocean — yet another sign of an ongoing hurricane season.

The National Hurricane Center says it is a 60-mph storm moving to the west-northwest at 8 mph. A hurricane watch is in effect for the islands of Guadeloupe, Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla, St. Maarten, St. Martin and St. Bathelemy.

Tropical Storm Tammy is located about 100 miles northeast of Barbados. Forecasters have been monitoring the system for the past couple of days given its gradual organization.

People who live in the Lesser Antilles should keep a close watch on the system. Weather computer models, including the American GFS and European, have come into better agreement of showing an organizing tropical storm that impacts some of the islands before curving off into the open Atlantic Ocean.

By early Saturday, Tropical Storm Tammy could be near or at hurricane strength.

Models also agree that people in Florida and the U.S. can likely breathe a sigh of relief as the storm will remain out to sea.
