SARASOTA, Fla. — While speaking Thursday at Sarasota High School, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that he would be awarding $100,000 to each of five direct support organizations for Tampa Bay counties with the hardest hit school districts from Hurricane Milton.

Those counties include:

  • Hillsborough County
  • Manatee County
  • Pasco County
  • Pinellas County
  • Sarasota County

"Returning to a normal routine in the aftermath of a disaster is essential for kids’ well-being," the governor said on X. " It was great to see that happening this morning at Sarasota High School. This requires the help of teachers and school personnel who themselves are still dealing with the aftermath of the storm."

Florida Commissioner of Education Manny Díaz Jr. thanked DeSantis for his work regarding recovery efforts after Hurricanes Helene and Milton and getting Florida schools back open "in record time."

"There's no one better that I can think of to lead our state during these tough times, and as you can see, we have our schools open again less than one week after the storm," Díaz Jr. said.
