TAMPA, Fla. — A falling road sign caused a deadly crash on I-4 in Tampa as Hurricane Helene passed by the Tampa Bay area.
A 61-year-old man was driving a car with three passengers, a 44-year-old woman, a 24-year-old man and a 23-year-old man, Thursday night. As they approached 21st Street, a freeway sign fell on the car, killing the 23-year-old, according to Florida Highway Patrol officials. The woman and two other men were not injured.
The crash was reported around 7:53 p.m. at mile marker 1, troopers said. Traffic cameras showed a heavy police presence as troopers investigated the crash.
Helene was downgraded from a Category 4 hurricane to a tropical storm after passing north through Florida.
As Helene neared the northeast Gulf Coast, it brought "catastrophic" winds and storm surge to parts of the region, according to the National Hurricane Center.
