Travelers at Tampa International Airport face weather delays, cancellations

Airport representatives say they are expecting 80,000 travelers this weekend.

TAMPA, Fla. — Bad weather mixed with one of the busiest spring break weekends doesn’t fare well for some flyers at Tampa International Airport (TPA).

As of about 4:15 p.m. on Friday, representatives from the airport told us they’d already seen 52 cancellations (about 10 percent of total flights on Friday) and 152 delays (about 30 percent of flights on Friday). They say that weather issues north of the Bay area were to blame.

Keep in mind, this is all happening on one of the busiest spring break weekends for TPA, along with the SEC Men's Basketball tournament being hosted at Amalie Arena in downtown Tampa.

Airport reps tell us they are expecting 80,000 travelers on Saturday and Sunday.

We spoke to some people who say they’ve been waiting for hours already, and they don’t know when they’ll be leaving.

“We were ready to leave for the airport, and we found out an hour delay, and we were halfway there and we found out another hour…so now we’re two hours behind schedule,” one passenger said while waiting for her flight.

If you’re leaving out on Saturday, you could find yourself in a similar position.

A spokesman person for the airport says they are expecting more cancellations and delays to come along with the severe weather forecasted to roll through the area.
