MATLACHA, Fla. — Florida troopers arrested a man believed to have been driving drunk when he crashed into five people sitting outside "That BBQ Place" restaurant in Lee County, authorities said.
One person, an 80-year-old woman from Matlacha, died from her injuries.
Cody Curtis, a 24-year-old who lives in Cape Coral, faces charges of DUI manslaughter, DUI serious bodily injury, DUI property damage and DUI injury, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. He was heading east on Pine Island Drive just before 6 p.m. Saturday, April 13, when his car veered off the road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
His car crashed into five people sitting outside at restaurant tables, a parked motorcycle and a truck traveling west, troopers said.
The 80-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, while three people were taken to the hospital with serious injuries and another person was treated for minor injuries.
Troopers said Curtis' toxicology screening determined he had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.137% — above Florida's legal limit of 0.08%.
The crash remains under investigation.
