LEE COUNTY, Fla. — A Cape Coral man was driving east on Pine Island Road when he veered off the road and crashed into the outside area of a restaurant on Saturday.
The 24-year-old drove off the road into a no parking sign, a decorative post and continued into the seating area of "The BBQ Place" just before 6 p.m. in Lee County, according to a news release by Florida Highway Patrol.
He collided with five pedestrians eating outside, the building and a parked motorcycle. After that crash, he kept driving and crashed into several other posts, mailboxes and garbage cans. Then he went back onto the road and crashed into a pickup truck.
An 80-year-old woman was a pedestrian who was killed, and the four others were transported to a hospital. A 77-year-old man's injuries are listed as serious, and the other pedestrians, ranging in age from 55-67, had minor injuries, according to troopers.
Both the sedan and pickup truck drivers were not injured.
The crash is under investigation and charges are pending, troopers said.
