Reports: Over $1 million worth of cocaine discovered floating off Florida Keys

CBS News reports that there was a total of 65 pounds of cocaine recovered.

ISLAMORADA, Fla. — Over $1 million worth of cocaine was discovered this weekend floating in the Florida Keys by recreational boaters, news outlets report.

According to an article from CBS News, the drugs were discovered Saturday about seven miles off Islamorada. There was a reported 65 pounds of cocaine discovered.

Samuel Briggs II, the acting chief patrol agent of the U.S. Border Patrol, posted a video on X showing the recovered cocaine being rolled away on a dolly Monday night.

In a different post on Facebook, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office posted a picture of a package holding 21 separately wrapped kilograms of cocaine that were also found Saturday afternoon off Islamorada. The packaging shows a bald eagle on it, similar to the packages seen in Briggs' post on X.

This incident comes only over a week after 25 bricks of cocaine were found by divers off the coast of Key West. The bricks were found with fake Nike logos on them. The next day, the same amount of cocaine was found in Dauphin Island, Alabama, CBS reports.

It also comes over a month after another 65 pounds of cocaine were discovered off the Florida Keys, according to CBS Miami.

CBS explains that around 60% of the world's cocaine is produced in Columbia.
