CLEARWATER, Fla. — A planned stop from Gov. Ron DeSantis Wednesday at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium has been canceled, according to his office.
The reason — inclement weather affecting the Tampa Bay area. A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect through 5 p.m. Wednesday for much of the Tampa Bay area, including Pinellas County.
What DeSantis planned to speak about wasn't clear as the governor's office didn't provide any additional details. We do know Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody planned to be with DeSantis.
Last month, DeSantis made another visit to the Tampa Bay area in Redington Shores. During that visit in April, DeSantis signed legislation into law that creates a program for condo owners to prepare their homes against hurricane damage. It also provides funds for a similar program for homeowners. Both laws go into effect on July 1.
Also in April, DeSantis signed House Bill 1565, which boosts red tide research and directs money toward expanding Florida’s Wildlife Corridor. This bill will allow the Department of Environmental Protection, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and MOTE Marine Laboratory to continue their efforts to address the impacts of red tide through technology.
It will go into effect on July 1.
