POLK COUNTY, Fla. — A van heading west on Interstate 4 crashed into the back of an FDOT road ranger Monday evening.

The crash happened just after 5 p.m. just west of Lakeland in Polk County. FHP troopers say the vehicle failed to move over for the road ranger, which was behind a disabled vehicle stopped for a flat tire.

The vehicle, traveling in the inside paved shoulder, hit the rear of the road ranger, propelling it forward and causing it to hit the rear of the disabled vehicle.

The male driver of the Ford vehicle died at the scene. A female passenger remains in critical condition at Lakeland Regional Hospital. Both their names are pending next of kin notification.

The driver of the road ranger had minor injuries and the driver of the third vehicle had no reported injuries, FHP adds.
