VENICE, Fla. — Those living on the island of Venice will have water services shut off before Hurricane Milton moves into the west coast of Florida.
City officials announced that the utilities department is expected to shut off water on the evening of Tuesday, Oct. 8.
That means water services, including fire protection, will remain off for the entire duration of the storm and until repairs are made.
Wastewater services and power will also likely be shut off during this time.
According to the city, this move is necessary to protect the island's potable water system and restore services faster after the storm.
As Venice continues reeling from the devastating effects of Hurricane Helene, residents are asked to follow evacuation orders, which are mandatory for Sarasota County residents living in zones A and B.
Regardless of where you live in the county, if you are in a manufactured home or houseboat, you must leave. Those living in evacuation zone C are also asked to prepare to evacuate if the storm intensifies.
While it is not advised, anyone choosing to shelter in place should prepare by storing as much water as possible, including filling bathtubs and purchasing bottled water.
City officials warn that it may take several days for water service to be restored. Once it is restored, Venice residents will be under a boil water advisory until further notice.
"When you boil water for eating and drinking, bring it to a rolling boil for 3 full minutes and then let it cool," Venice officials said.
