Venice officials urge drivers to stay off roads, announce services reopening Friday following Helene

Leaders say fast-moving water is flooding many roadways along the coast.

VENICE, Fla. — Officials in Venice are urging residents to stay off the road as the city is experiencing storm surge from Hurricane Helene.

Leaders say fast-moving water is flooding many roadways along the coast.

"This is not the time to be on the road if you don’t need to be," Venice leaders said in a news release. "Never attempt to drive through floodwaters. Turn around, don’t drown. If you need emergency assistance, call 911."

The city is asking you to shelter in place until conditions improve.

Humphris Park at the South Jetty and the Venice Fishing Pier are also closed. Officials are urging you to not visit these areas. Conditions are dangerous and will continue to worsen as storm surge increases overnight following high tide.

Venice, however, is opening up certain services once the storm clears.

Trash, recyclables and yard waste collection will resume at 9 a.m. Friday.

Residents are asked to not place trash, recycling carts or other materials at the curb overnight or in flooded areas. They recommend you wait until high winds have subsided before placing anything curbside to help eliminate potential airborne hazards.

City hall and other facilities are also opening on Friday, but staff will be working on storm recovery during the day.
