Deputies: Drunk semi-truck driver hit, killed woman in head-on crash in Winter Haven

Moyses Ramirez, 21, was charged with DUI manslaughter after 27-year-old Chelsea Darwin was killed in a head-on crash in Winter Haven, Florida.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — A 21-year-old semi-truck driver was charged with DUI manslaughter after causing a head-on crash that killed a woman Wednesday night in Winter Haven, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies received multiple calls around 8:20 p.m. about a crash involving a semi-truck and a blue 2015 Hyundai Sonata on Spirit Lake Road at Shadow Wood Way.

Moyses Ramirez, 21, was driving the semi-truck south on Spirit Lake Road while 27-year-old Chelsea Darwin was driving north in her Hyundai Sonata.

That's when, according to investigators, Ramirez crossed over the center line and crashed head-on into the Sonata, killing Darwin.

Witnesses reportedly saw Ramirez throwing objects from his truck before deputies found four empty Modelo beer cans near the crash scene.

Deputies said Ramirez was also showing signs of impairment at the scene. His two breath samples measured 0.107 and 0.108, according to the sheriff's office. 

Following field sobriety testing, Ramirez was arrested and booked into the Polk County Jail. Ramirez is charged with DUI manslaughter, tampering with evidence, DUI with property damage and DUI.
