How are Pinellas County students going to make up time lost during recent hurricanes? School leaders to discuss

A special school board meeting is set for next week to discuss proposed changes to the school calendar.

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — Pinellas County students lost 46.5 hours of instructional time due to Hurricanes Helene and Milton, and now, the district has a proposal on the table to make up some of that time.

A special school board meeting is scheduled on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. to consider those proposed changes, which are outlined below:

For high school students:

  • Monday, Jan. 6 is a previously-approved hurricane makeup day.
  • May 29 would be a regular school day, pending board approval.
  • Feb. 17 would be a regular school day, pending board approval.
  • High school graduations will occur at the end of May with locations TBD.
  • Semester 1 exams would be waived (except dual enrollment when applicable), pending board approval.
  • Semester 1 grade calculations would change (Q1 letter grade + Q2 letter grade/2), pending board approval.

For middle school students:

  • Monday, Jan. 6 is a previously-approved hurricane makeup day.
  • Feb. 17 would be a regular school day, pending board approval.
  • May 29 would be a regular school day, pending board approval.
  • Semester 1 exams would be waived, pending board approval.
  • Semester 1 grade calculations would change (Q1 letter grade + Q2 letter grade/2), pending board approval.

For elementary school students:

  • Monday, Jan. 6 is a previously-approved hurricane makeup day.
  • Feb. 17 would be a regular school day, pending board approval.
  • May 29 would be a regular school day, pending board approval.

Other changes & proposals up for consideration:

  • Monday, Nov. 25 and Tuesday, Nov. 26 are previously-approved hurricane makeup days. These days were originally days off for the week of Thanksgiving.
  • Keep exams and move the completion of semester 1 to January.
  • Friday, April 18 and Monday, April 21 could be hurricane makeup days.
  • Add additional minutes to school days.
  • Add additional days to the school year.
