LARGO, Fla. — Concerned family members called law enforcement when two brothers they were expecting to show up for a family vacation in Kentucky never arrived, authorities said.
Deputies would soon learn that 61-year-old James McKinley Barber Sr. and 62-year-old Wesley Barber were shot and killed Friday at a home located at 7981 Smoketree Court in Largo.
Hours later, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office asked the public to be on the lookout for 28-year-old James Barber Jr. He was said to be armed after walking away from the shooting scene.
Law enforcement said Wesley Barber was visiting Barber Sr. and Barber Jr. from Kentucky before leaving for vacation. The 28-year-old was to stay behind and take care of the family dog.
Family members went to Barber Sr.'s home and found his car in the driveway with the trunk open. They called for help — concerned because of Barber Jr.'s mental health history and knowing there was a firearm in the home.
Deputies found blood coming from under the front door of the home when they arrived at the scene. Once inside, they found the two brothers dead with multiple gunshot wounds, the sheriff's office said.
Surveillance camera audio recorded around 6:07 a.m. Friday captured multiple gunshots and who's believed to be Barber Jr. yelling, "F*** you. Dead ass don't give a f***, bro."
Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested Barber Jr. Saturday morning on two counts of first-degree murder. He is awaiting transport to the Pinellas County Jail.
