TAMPA, Fla. — Crews battled a two-alarm fire Thursday afternoon at an apartment complex in Tampa.

The fire broke out around 3:30 p.m. at the Tuscany Pointe apartments off of W. Hillsborough Avenue near N Lincoln Avenue.

Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the building.

"The fire started on the balcony of a second story apartment and traveled up into the attic space," Tampa Fire Rescue said.

Firefighters attacked the blaze from the interior along with ground and aerial attacks.

Tampa Fire Rescue said the fire was under control within 30 minutes.

Two people were evacuated from the apartment complex and one firefighter was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Eight apartments were affected. The American Red Cross is assisting the families in need.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Several people spotted a large cloud of smoke in the Tampa area on Thursday afternoon. Tampa Fire Rescue confirmed that was due to a controlled burn-turned-brush fire at Upper Tampa Bay Park and was not related to the apartment fire.
