Controlled burn becomes brush fire in Tampa

Officials said the fire spread "due to an unexpected wind shift."

TAMPA, Fla. — What started as a controlled burn Thursday afternoon at a Tampa park has turned into a brush fire, according to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.

Around 7:30 p.m., fire crews said they were with the Florida Forest Service battling the blaze at Upper Tampa Bay Conservation Park.

"Due to an unexpected wind shift, the prescribed burn spotted over into another area of the park," fire crews said.

The 596-acre park is located on Double Branch Road off of West Hillsborough Avenue. Officials say the fire involves about 100 to 125 acres of the park.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue first responded to calls for a smoke investigation at 2:47 p.m. along West Hillsborough Avenue.

Tampa Fire Rescue confirmed it was due to the controlled burn at Upper Tampa Bay Park.

The plan, according to fire officials, was for the Florida Forest Service to burn 10 acres in an effort to reduce brush for potential fires later in the season.

As the winds shifted and the fire spread, Tampa Fire Rescue was joined by crews from Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and the Tampa Police Department.

The fire was about 90% contained as of 8:30 p.m. There were no evacuations or injuries to first responders.

Upper Tampa Bay Park will be closed until further notice.
