Hillsborough County deputy run over by suspect leaves hospital

Kalin Hall was run over by a driver he tried to pull over in a black BMW just after midnight Friday. No arrest has been made at this time.

TAMPA, Fla. — "He ran over me," Hillsborough County Deputy Kalin Hall cried out after he was rammed by a driver he tried to pull over, body camera footage released by the sheriff's office shows.

The 33-year-old deputy underwent surgery at Tampa General Hospital Friday morning following the incident.

It reportedly all started just after midnight Friday on Bearss Avenue near Nebraska Avenue in New Tampa. Hall tried to pull over the driver of a black BMW in an unmarked patrol vehicle equipped with emergency equipment, according a sheriff's office spokesperson. While the driver stopped, as soon as Hall approached the car, they took off.

You can hear over body camera footage Hall reported the driver had sped off and he wasn't going to pursue and would turn his emergency lights off.

About 15 minutes later, Hall located the driver on Plantation Oaks Drive, off Amberly Drive and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, and attempted to pull the BMW over. The sheriff's office said the driver had backed into a parking space on Plantation Oaks Drive. Body camera video shows Hall stop his unmarked patrol car and quickly get out. Moments after he walks around his car, presumably toward the BMW, the driver accelerates and immediately rams into the deputy and speeds off.

Hall falls to the ground and you can hear his agonized cries before calling in that he had been hit and that he needed EMS. His leg was broken.

At this time,  Hall has been released from Tampa General Hospital, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office confirmed in a news release.

Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister stated Hall's anticipated full recovery "brings immense relief" to the agency.

"This marks the fourth time in less than a year that our deputies have faced brazen and violent attacks," Chronister said in a statement. "This criminal and horrific behavior is reprehensible and will not be tolerated. While there are those who seek to disturb our community's safety and well-being, we are proud to serve a community that stands firmly behind our deputies. We are deeply thankful for the community's unwavering support for Deputy Hall during this time."

The sheriff's office says the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The driver abandoned the BMW not far away, the agency said.

Hall suffered serious injuries, including a broken tibia and other injuries to his leg and was rushed to Tampa General Hospital, the sheriff's office said. The spokesperson said Hall will undergo surgery and is expected to be okay. According to the agency, Hall has been with the agency for 11 years.

According to the sheriff's office, the owner of the BMW has been identified and found and investigators believe he is the driver, however, as of 6 a.m. Friday, no arrests have been made.

Anyone who may have seen what happened in the Plantation Oaks Drive area is asked to contact the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
