Cold shelters opening across Tampa Bay ahead of chilly nighttime temperatures

With chilly temperatures on the horizon, and feels like temps only showing lower numbers, counties across Tampa Bay have decided to open shelter doors.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — With the Tampa Bay area starting and ending Tuesday with chilly temperatures, cold weather shelters are opening up across the region to make sure people can stay warm at night.

Temperatures will go from the 40s in the morning and only reach the upper 50s — which is well below average. Leading into 6 a.m. on Wednesday, the highest temperatures across the area will be 50 degrees in Venice.

Feels like temps show the coldest areas at that time on Wednesday morning include:

  • Dade City: 37 degrees
  • Polk City: 39 degrees
  • Crystal River: 39

With these chilly temperatures on the horizon, and feels like temps only showing lower numbers, counties across Tampa Bay have decided to open shelter doors to those needing help to fight the cold.

Here's a breakdown of shelters opening Tuesday night across the Tampa Bay region.

Pinellas County

Cold shelters will open Tuesday night across Pinellas County at multiple locations to help keep residents safe.

Tarpon Springs

Boys and Girls Club:

  • 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Clearwater

First United Methodist Church:

  • 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
    • 411 Turner Street

Pinellas Park

Boys and Girls Club:

  • 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
    • 7790 61st Street N

St. Petersburg

Northwest Church:

  • 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
    • 6330 54th Avenue N

WestCare Turning Point:

  • 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
    • 1810 5th Avenue N

Unitarian Universalist Church:

  • 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
    • 100 Mirror Lake Drive N

Salvation Army:

  • 6 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.
    • 1400 4th Street S

Allendale United Methodist Church:

  • 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Families living in Pinellas County in search of a shelter are told to call 211 for assistance.

Citrus County

Anyone needing to stay warm in the county can head over to a nearby cold shelter.

Homosassa

Nature Coast Community Church:

  • 6 p.m. to 7 a.m.
    • 5113 S Suncoast Boulevard

There will be hot meals, warm sleeping areas, showers, snacks and more, shelter leaders explain on Facebook.

People can also take free transit rides to and from the shelter.

"We would love to have you come be warm, comforted, fed, and safe from the bitter temps dropping back in," leaders with the cold weather shelter said in the post. "Our shelter is for anyone who needs to be warm."

After Wednesday, the Tampa Bay area will warm back up to normal. Rain chances are on the rise at the end of the weekend and down the pipeline, meteorologists are tracking another area of low pressure that could potentially bring rain either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.
