TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay History Center on Friday will welcome Ybor City native and civil rights legend, Bernard Lafayette, to its annual Black History Month Reception for an award named in his honor.
Lafayette, who worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and was with him hours before his assassination, played a critical role in the civil rights movement as an organizer and demonstrator.
The third annual reception, which will include an African fashion show, will take place on Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m. After the program, attendees can also visit the center’s permanent Black history exhibit, “Travails and Triumphs.”
Former Sen. Arthenia Joyner will be the guest speaker. 10 Tampa Bay investigative reporter and fill-in anchor, Emerald Morrow, will emcee.
