Family of 26-year-old woman stabbed to death in Winter Haven pleads for answers

Winter Haven police say a woman, identified by family as Angel Snell, was stabbed multiple times at a construction site near the Banyan Beach Motel.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — A mother is making a plea for answers after her daughter was stabbed to death late Friday in Winter Haven.

According to Winter Haven Police, the woman, identified by family as 26-year-old Ashley Snell, was stabbed multiple times behind the old Banyan Beach Motel. A witness said the woman was involved in an argument with an unknown man before he hit her multiple times, according to police.

Her mother and grandmother are remembering Angel as a compassionate woman who'd literally give strangers the clothes off her back.

"She came to my momma's house a couple of times with no shoes and said hey mom I gave this man or this lady my shoes," said Cherie Smith, Snell's mother.

Smith says her daughter experienced periodic homelessness, but had plans to return to school and regain custody of her 5-year-old daughter.

"She was getting back on that right track," said Smith.

Winter Haven Police Chief David Brannan said they're thoroughly investigating this violent crime, but need the public's help.

"According to at least one witness, she was in an argument with an unknown black male and he made movements towards her and that's when the stabbing occurred," Chief Brannan said. "We've been trying to find people to interview. We've done some interviews, but we still need the public's help."

Smith says she won't know peace until she gets answers.

"What if that was your child? Wouldn't you want someone to come forward?" Smith said. "All I want is for someone to come forward."

The family is raising funds for Snell's funeral expenses. Those who wish to help can send donations on Cash App at $Cherie201904.
