ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A 20-year-old and 19-year-old were arrested early Sunday morning after they were seen racing over the Gandy Bridge, arrest affidavits explain.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a state trooper was traveling east on Gandy Boulevard at 2:09 a.m., approaching the Gandy Bridge on the Pinellas County side.
While driving, the trooper eventually saw two cars, a green Dodge Charger and a black Infinity, allegedly side by side going the same speed. After a moment, both cars started to speed up rapidly.
The trooper said the cars did this "in a competitive attempt to outdistance each other."
Both drivers, 20-year-old Daniel Cabrera and 19-year-old Timothy Devine, were arrested and booked for racing on a highway. They were placed under a $150 bond which they both paid.
In recent weeks, there have been several arrests related to drivers caught racing or driving at excessive speeds on Gandy Boulevard or the Gandy Bridge.
Within the last two weeks in October, four people were arrested and accused of going more than 100 mph while racing on the Gandy Bridge, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.
It's a problem that has persisted and has made this Tampa Bay area bridge notorious for lead feet and illegal racing.
