ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — St. Pete Pride took over downtown St. Pete on Saturday, attracting people from near and far.
“We were just driving in and we were commenting on the different license plates and the different counties and even some of the different states. We saw some Georgia and Texas,” Joe Grimes said.
Allen Muzzy and Joe Grimes went to the Pride Parade together. They said they've seen St. Pete Pride grow over the years.
“This is like our sixth one,” Grimes said.
They said they come back every year.
“Just the fact that I'm allowed to celebrate and be proud of who I am and the choices that I get to make to know that I live in a city and a community that is very accepting of that,” Grimes said.
Many said they take pride in embracing who they are.
“My anxiety comes from wanting to make sure that everyone has a good time. Pride is a celebration and didn't use to be. So, the fact that we're able to celebrate it is a gift beyond belief,” Mr. Vyn Suazion said.
Organizers said this is the largest pride event in the southeast. Bayshore Drive was packed with people celebrating. It was also packed with people making sure everyone stayed safe.
Local law enforcement officials were there patrolling the streets and Bay area. Security also searched every person that came in. This was done to make sure people of all ages like Kora can enjoy the weekend with her parents without any issues.
“It's about being able to be our whole true selves and being able to celebrate that and we hope that she's proud of that too growing up,” Lacey Boldman said.
Pride festivities will continue Sunday in downtown St. Pete. There's a street fair in the Grand Central District starting at noon.
Organizers said they have stuff available for everyone. People can expect to see street performers, a family fun zone along with a bunch of food vendors.
