Tampa Bay experienced another hike in gas prices this week

The most recent hike comes after a slight dip in gas prices last weekend.

TAMPA, Fla. — Florida’s state average price for gas rose 10 cents Friday, days after it dropped by a few cents last weekend, according to a news release.

The state’s new 2024 high is $3.48, as gas prices continue to steadily rise due to a gasoline supply shortage, according to the release.

“Drivers may be in line for another round of rising prices after gasoline and crude oil futures rose to new 2024 highs last week," AAA spokesperson Mark Jenkins said.

Gasoline futures rose by 19 cents last week, which increased gas prices to their new high by 11 cents, officials added.

The price of crude oil also rose by 4% in the country last week due to worries over Ukraine's attacks on Russian refineries, officials said.

These trends are common during spring months, Jenkins said, simply due to higher demand for gas during spring break season. Also, seasonal refinery maintenance and the switch to more expensive “summer-blend” gas are to blame.

Last year around this time, Florida gas prices reached a high of $3.72 per gallon, the news release said. However, the highest gas price of $3.85 a gallon didn’t happen until August.
