ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Two new tropical storms, Nadine and Oscar, have formed, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The good news? Both systems are not expected to affect Florida.
Tropical Storm Nadine
As of the latest advisory, Tropical Storm Nadine is currently nearing landfall in Belize and is expected to bring heavy rains and tropical storm conditions over parts of the country and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.
Right now, Nadine is about 60 miles east of Belize City and 105 miles southeast of Chetumal, Mexico. The tropical storm currently has maximum sustained winds of 45 mph and its present movement is at 9 mph.
For Nadine, a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for:
- Belize City
- Belize to Cancun, Mexico, including Cozumel
According to NHC, a tropical storm warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area, in this case later this morning.
"Interests elsewhere in Belize and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico should monitor the progress of this system," forecasters said in the latest advisory.
Widespread rainfall of 4-8 inches is expected with Nadine across northern Belize, northern Guatemala and southern Mexican states from Quintana Roo westward to Veracruz. As for storm surge, forecasters say minor coastal flooding is possible in areas of onshore winds near and to the north of where the center moves inland.
Tropical Storm Oscar
Oscar formed just east of the Turks and Caicos Islands, according to NHC.
As of the 11 a.m. advisory, the small tropical storm is about 190 miles east-southeast of the southeastern Bahamas and 495 miles east of Camaguey, Cuba.
The government of the Bahamas has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Southeastern Bahamas.
Meanwhile, Cuba has done the same for the provinces of Guantanamo, Holguin, and Las Tunas, and a Tropical
Storm Watch for Camaguey.
Oscar is expected to bring 2-4 inches of rainfall, with isolated amounts of 6 inches, across the Turks and Caicos, southeastern Cuba and the southeastern Bahamas through Tuesday.
