SHELTERS: Where you can go ahead of impacts from Tropical Storm Debby

The tropical system is expected to cause a 2-4 foot surge in the immediate Tampa Bay area, with a higher surge farther north.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay area is opening shelters ahead of anticipated impacts from Tropical Storm Debby.

Regardless of the development of the tropical system, the region is expected to receive heavy rainfall and possible flash flooding as a result. Because of this, some Tampa Bay-area counties are opening shelters for people ahead of the storm.

Here's a rundown of shelter locations — this list will be updated as more information is received:

Hillsborough County

Hillsborough County said it will open an emergency shelter on Saturday, Aug. 3, ahead of potential storm impacts. The county said the shelter will open at 6 p.m.

The shelter is located at Erwin Technical College, 2010 E. Hillsborough Ave, Tampa, FL 33610.

County leaders said the shelter is open to everyone, including people with special needs. It's also pet-friendly. However, the county urges people to only use the shelter as a last resort. If possible, check with family and friends for possible other options.

Cots and blankets won't be available at this shelter, so residents should be prepared to bring their own comfortable items.

People who are planning on bringing their pets to the shelter will need to have a sturdy carrier for each pet so that they will be comfortable for the duration of their stay. Collars and leashes, as well as pet supplies, will also need to be brought.
