HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. — The National Weather Service has issued a Storm Surge Watch for Hernando County, specifically the Hernando Beach and Bayport areas.
The watch is also in effect for coastal Citrus and other northern counties on Florida's Gulf Coast.
The watch went into effect at 10:59 a.m. June 5 and lasts until further notice.
A Storm Surge Watch means life-threatening flooding from rising water moving inland from the coastline is possible somewhere within the county in the next 48 hours.
According to the NWS, during the storm surge peak, there is the potential for 2-4 feet of water flooding above ground. The NWS currently says they believe the peak will be around high tides on Sunday.
