ST. PETERSBURG, Fla — As Tropical Storm Eta continues its trek toward South Florida and into the Gulf of Mexico, the NHC is forecasting the storm to reach hurricane strength by Monday.
This means Floridians across the state could see gusty winds and heavy rains-- a combination for power outages that Duke Energy said it is ready to fix.
"With Florida in the path of Tropical Storm Eta, Duke Energy Florida is ready to respond to potential power outages and is encouraging customers to prepare for the storm," the energy company wrote, predicting that those in the Tampa Bay area may experience weather-related outages beginning late tonight into tomorrow.
And while the company's crews are ready to lend a hand, it says there are steps you can take at home to be prepared. Ahead of the storm Duke Energy suggests customers sign up to receive outage alerts and be sure to keep the website handy to report outages in your area.
You can also text Text OUT to 57801 to report an outage, but Duke Energy does note that standard text and data charges may apply.
There's also the element of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. To comply with CDC guidance the company asks customers to remain outside of marked work zones and refrain from approaching repair crews.
Here are some important safety tips to keep in mind:
- Have a plan in place and make a checklist
- Create an emergency supply kit full of everything your family would need for two weeks
- Keep a portable radio or TV, or NOAA weather radio on hand to monitor weather forecasts
- Charge cellphones, computers and other electronic devices ahead of time
- Maintain a plan to move family members to alternative locations in case of extended power outages
- If a power line falls while driving, stay in your car
- If you lose power with a full refrigerator or freezer keep the doors closed to maintain the temperature. A refrigerator is said to keep food cold for four hours post outage, while a freezer will last for approximately 48 hours.
