Tropical Storm Chris makes landfall over eastern Mexico, expected to quickly dissipate

Heavy rainfall and flooding is expected across eastern Mexico through Monday.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — About as quickly as Tropical Storm Chris formed, it's expected to dissipate quickly as it continues to move inland over eastern Mexico, the National Hurricane Center said

On Sunday, Tropical Depression Three strengthened enough to become the third named storm for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

The storm will bring heavy rainfall and flooding over portions of eastern Mexico.

As of the 5 a.m. advisory, the storm was located near Tuxpan, Mexico with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. Its present movement is west at 12 mph and should continue until it dissipates over eastern Mexico late Monday.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Cabo Rojo to Puerto Veracruz with tropical storm-force winds extended outward up to 70 miles from the center.

This system is expected to produce rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches across portions of eastern Mexico through Monday. Maximum rainfall totals between 10-12 inches are possible across the higher terrain of the Mexican states of Guanajuato, Queretaro and San Luis Potosi.

That rainfall will likely lead to areas of flooding, including mudslides possible in areas of higher terrain, according to NHC.
