TAMPA, Fla. — We're keeping a close eye on a broad area of low pressure that could develop into something more significant in the Gulf of Mexico.
The National Weather Service says the disturbance is currently producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms over southern Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and the southwest Gulf.
Meteorologists say some development is possible in the coming days, as it moves generally toward the northwest and then north over the western Gulf.
It's expected to merge with a cold front this weekend to be a rain maker for the south/southeast this weekend.
As of the most recent NWS update, there's currently a 50 percent chance of development over the next two days.
