The term "monsoon" is often used to describe a downpour of rain, but it is actually a season defined by prevailing wind patterns that impact seasonal precipitation in some parts of the world.

Thailand's rainy season happens each year, and it was the sudden and intense rainfall that caught 12 young boys and their soccer coach in a dark cave.

The miraculous and ongoing rescue of the Thai youth soccer team capturing headlines around the world has been two weeks in the making, though time is of the essence to get everyone out safely.

This region of the world experiences a rainy, or monsoon, season from July into the fall. While the team spent time exploring the northern Thailand cave, a sudden rainfall flooded a section and kept them trapped.

While, technically, the rain confined the team before the official start of the season, there are concerns additional heavy rainfall could tamper rescue efforts of the remaining team members.
