CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. — A waterspout turned tornado damaged two fishing huts and other structures Sunday evening in Crystal River, according to the Citrus County Sheriff's Office.
The National Weather Service confirmed the waterspout moved across portions of Kings Bay before coming ashore, at which case it became a tornado. It was officially rated an EF-0 with maximum sustained winds at 65 mph.
The Florida Division of Emergency Management and the Citrus County Sheriff's Office shared pictures showing damage in the area of Fort Island Trail and Roy Thomas Road. Earlier in the evening, trained spotters shared pictures of a funnel cloud in the same location.
No injuries were reported.
Tornado causes damage in Citrus County
People should seek shelter if they spot a waterspout as they sometimes can produce damage, such as this one. A tornado warning was not issued for this particular storm because the waterspout development was in an extremely small area and far away from the weather service's radar, the agency said.
"...The radar beam would not effectively sample the low-level rotation in the lowest 1,000 to 2,000 feet where this waterspout developed," the weather service said in a statement.
