Tornado damages car, sends debris flying in Clearwater Beach; serious damage reported in Dunedin

Close to 600 people across Pinellas County are without power.

CLEARWATER, Fla. — A large waterspout that came ashore as a tornado just north of Pier 60 caused damage in a north Clearwater Beach neighborhood.

Farther northeast, severe weather resulted in damage to parts of Dunedin.

Evan Occhino shared several images early Thursday morning that showed a metal column that pierced through a car's windshield and debris thrown about. Reports sent to the National Weather Service indicate much of the damage happened in the area around Eldorado Avenue and Bay Esplanade.

There are no confirmed reports of any injuries from these storms.

Access is being restricted to the northern part of Clearwater Beach due to the damage from the tornado, police said. Officers are urging people to avoid the area.

In Dunedin, Causeway Boulevard is shutdown due to damage in the area. The areas most affected by damage include Causeway Boulevard and S Puala Drive. People in the area should watch out for downed power lines and stay clear of the above areas for now, Dunedin Fire says.

10 Tampa Bay's Nick Volturo reported from the Causeway Plaza on Bayshore Boulevard in Dunedin where windows were shattered in local businesses and a truck had even been overturned in the parking lot.

"A closer look at the extensive damage at the Causeway Plaza," Volturo said on Twitter. "This Isuzu truck was flipped over on its side. Business owners say it felt like a tornado ripped through the plaza around 1:30 this morning."

Forecasters warned of the threat of damaging winds and isolated tornadoes into the overnight hours. Since late Wednesday evening, storms moving along and near a frontal boundary showed signs of strengthening and rotation.

Across Pinellas County, close to 600 people are without power as of this writing, according to Duke Energy
