ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The City of St. Petersburg has partnered with Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) to organize a two-week period of free fares within St. Pete city limits starting Monday, Sept. 30.
The St. Pete Emergency Zero Fare Program will assist thousands of people who lost their vehicles due to water inundation from Hurricane Helene.
"The City understands that residents are incurring additional financial burdens due to the storm's impacts all across the City, regardless of whether they lost a vehicle, or live in a flood-prone neighborhood," St. Pete city officials stated in a news release.
The fare-free period will last from Monday, Sept. 30 to Sunday, Oct. 13. The free fares will apply to regular bus trips that begin and end in St. Petersburg. Fares will be reinstated on Monday, Oct. 14, according to officials.
"As part of the City's recovery efforts and in order to reduce the financial and transportation impacts Helene has caused, the City has made this arrangement to assist our residents with their essential transportation needs and as a small gesture to help everyone through this tough time," St. Pete Mayor Ken Welch stated in the release.
Riders should know that the SunRunner will turn around at Pasadena due to westbound access limitations, according to officials.
