Free legal help available for those recovering from Hurricane Ian

Residents in 19 counties across Florida now have access to the hotline.

TAMPA, Fla. — Those affected by the devastation left behind by Hurricane Ian now have access to a free legal help hotline through the American Bar Association.

According to ABA's website, the hotline is available to connect residents who live in Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Flagler, Hardee, Highlands, Hillsborough, Lake, Lee, Manatee, Orange, Osceola, Pinellas, Polk, Putnam, St. Johns, Sarasota, Seminole and Volusia counties to free legal services.

Hotline callers may get help with legal issues like:

  • FEMA and SBA financial benefits
  • Home repair contracts and property insurance claims
  • Re-doing wills and other important legal documents destroyed in the disaster
  • Price gouging, scams or identity theft
  • Landlord or tenant problems, or threats of foreclosure
  • Disability-related access to federal, state, and local disaster programs

Residents can call (866) 550-2929 or click here

The news release says the hotline partners cannot help in all cases. They cannot take cases where a settlement could include legal fees or an award, but they can refer those cases to other legal help.
