TAMPA, Fla. — Tropical Storm Helene is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane this week, with Florida's entire Gulf Coast bracing for potential weather impacts. That means evacuations are possible, especially with much of the state under a state of emergency.

Even if you don't have much time to evacuate, it's important to plan ahead to make sure your pets are safe and taken care of.

  • Check in advance if the shelter, home or hotel you're planning to evacuate to allows pets and if there are any restrictions.
  • Ensure you take at least 3-5 days worth of food, water and medication for your pets.
  • Make sure you have your pets' most up-to-date vaccination and medical records.
  • Take an extra collar, leash or harness in case one ends up getting damaged.
  • Have a pet first-aid kit with you.
  • Does your pet have a favorite toy or blanket? Take it along for comfort.

Never leave your pets alone if you have to evacuate during severe weather. Heavy wind, rain and storm surge can damage your home and yard during a hurricane or tropical storm. That means, your pets are at a high risk for injury and might even try to escape in your absence.
