Trash pickup services suspended in Tampa Bay area as Milton approaches

As Hurricane Milton approaches, the City of Tampa and area counties are suspending trash pickup services, including storm debris pickup from Hurricane Helene.

TAMPA, Fla. — Trash pickup services are suspended in the City of Tampa and area counties as Hurricane Milton approaches.

Waste Management has suspended services in Pasco, Hillsborough and Manatee counties on Wednesday, Oct. 9 and Thursday, Oct. 10.

Waste Management said storm debris and storm-impacted bulk items should be placed curbside, separate from regular trash.

Updates will be made here when services resume.

This is what Waste Management considers to be storm debris:

  • Vegetation: Large, loose yard waste piles including logs, plants and tree branches.
  • Construction and demolition: Building materials, carpet, drywall, furniture, lumber, mattresses and plumbing.
  • Appliances and white goods: Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, heat pumps, stoves, washers, dryers and water heaters.
  • Electronics: Computers, radios, stereos, televisions and other devices with a card.
  • Hazardous household waste: Cleaning supplies, batteries, lawn chemicals, oils, oil-based products and stains and pesticides.

Polk County Solid Waste has also suspended service for its customers for Thursday, Oct. 10. Thursday’s curbside collection customers will be serviced on Thursday, Oct. 17. 

Residential curbside collection will resume on Friday, Oct. 11. 

On Wednesday, Oct. 9, the North Central Landfill will close at 3 p.m. and the North Central Transfer Station will close at 1 p.m. If weather permits, they will reopen on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. Expect delays when self-hauling waste.

The City of Tampa is halting pickup services for Hurricane Helene storm debris beginning Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 3 p.m. 

Officials said not all neighborhoods will be able to receive service before the storm. Residents are advised, if possible, to move and secure any storm debris.
