HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — Hillsborough County deputies are in East Tampa Friday working to rescue people trapped in Alafia River flood waters.
The sheriff's office posted a video of more-than-waist-deep flood waters Friday morning. The National Weather Service designated that the river was experiencing "major" flooding following Hurricane Milton. According to the social media post, deputies assisted neighbors with evacuations by Rose Street.
Video from the sheriff's office shows crews on small motorboats canvassing the area. The flood water trapped trucks and stalled cars in the neighborhood and created new water lines on garages and doors. The homes were surrounded in what appeared to be a lake's worth of water.
According to early Friday morning data from the National Weather Service, the following bodies of water are under a "major" or "moderate" flood designation:
- Anclote River (Major)
- Withlacoochee River (Major)
- Cypress Creek (Major)
- Hillsborough River (Major)
- Alafia River (Major)
- Little Manatee River (Moderate)
Just over 24 hours after the Category 3 storm, it was unclear if the flood waters would recede before the weekend. The sheriff's office advises anyone experiencing an emergency to call 911.
