He put his son on a roof to keep him safe but lost him in storm surge

The father says he's he hopes for the best for his son but fears the worst. The boy still hasn't been found.

ABACO, The Bahamas — The last time a father on the Abaco Islands saw his son was when the powerful storm surge from Hurricane Dorian swept him away.

The Nassau Guardian said Adrian Farrington, 38, was trying to save his 5-year-old son from the deadly storm surge that the catastrophic hurricane brought to the Bahamas by putting him on a roof.

Farrington said he was trying to get on the roof with his son when a gust from Hurricane Dorian picked up the 5-year-old and plunged him back into the storm surge.

“I still could remember him reaching for me and calling me, ‘Daddy,’” Farrington told The Nassau Guardian.

The newspaper said Farrington pushed debris out of the way and jumped into the storm surge to try and find his son. Farrington remembers seeing shark fins in the water that surrounded the area the two were in.

After searching for any signs of his son in the water, he moved to higher ground, according to the newspaper. Farrington told The Guardian he hoped for the best for his son but fears the worst.

A group of people found Farrington trying to crawl to a clinic and helped carry him there. He was flown to a hospital in Nassau and was treated for cuts on his hand and two broken bones in his leg, according to The Nassau Guardian.

CBS News reports Farrington, a carpenter, saw at least 12 other people drown while he was fighting for his life during Dorian.

The number of deaths in the Bahamas is expected to soar.

CNN reported leaders in the Bahamas said there are still hundreds, even thousands of people still missing.

Morticians in Abaco are starting to embalm bodies because there are no coolers left to store bodies.
