TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — All interstate road closures in the Tampa Bay area were suspended by the Florida Department of Transportation Thursday because of the possible impact Hurricane Dorian could have.
The Selmon Expressway project, which is run by the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority, has secured the worksite on Thursday night.
Kymberly Graves, THEA's project information officer, explained that contractors working on the Selmon project shut down the site, not for Hurricane Dorian but for the Labor Day weekend.
FDOT said the contractors on all the construction projects are securing work sites, clearing traffic control devices that are not actively being used to direct traffic and checking drainage systems.
All lanes that can stay open on the interstate system in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco and Hernando counties will stay open.
FDOT says when hurricanes head toward the area, they tell all road and bridge contractors to temporarily suspend all operations on construction projects.
