CLEARWATER, Fla. — The eastbound lanes of the Courtney Campbell Causeway have been shut down due to wind-whipped waves caused by Hurricane Helene, the Clearwater Police Department said in an X post.

Westbound lanes are likely to follow, according to the department.

In a release, Florida Highway Patrol said drivers should seek alternate routes and, if possible, stay off the highway.

National Hurricane Center forecasters are describing Category 3 Hurricane Helene as a "very dangerous major hurricane" that is expected to bring damaging hurricane winds and storm surge Thursday evening to the Florida Big Bend region.

"Additional strengthening is forecast, and Helene is expected to be a major hurricane when it reaches the Florida Big Bend coast this evening."
